Laguz is the second EP and physical debut by KOI, the alias of mexican producer Diana Moreno, done after her first approaches to music.
This release is an extended play which became a long-play following time spent exploring soundscapes and playful voids, resulting in a sequence of unconventional beats full of textured analogue and field recordings, which also developed diverse audiovisual collaborations. Its sonic narrative expresses the need to constantly dissolve cadence through ambience.
Laguz emerged while also working with several collectives in KOI’s native city, and was supported by the Berlin based label AM 01:09:69 JUN-05-1970, who put out the first digital edition of this masterful debut. An atypical work for an atypical time: we encounter an artist that dares to explore such detailed terrains through sound design whilst maintaining a soul of beats and polyrhythms. Together, these have brought visual collaborations and concerts during the pandemic and this closing cycle, at the same time opening another one.
Just as molecules painted in darkness or playful beings in a black ocean, KOI’s atmospheres flow like actual fish in the sea, igniting a new breath in electronic dance music that promises to break the concepts of genre, style, and that also challenges imprint memories in the development of identity. It is a cerebral music animated by the search of inner worlds, resulting in a body that can’t stop moving and creating more.
Laguz is an exploration of these uncommon terrains and, as KOI’s first physical release, it marks the birth of the new Ekō label. This new adventure initiates a series of releases which will continue with a spirit of seeking union, both of the dancefloor and other-wordly sound realms.
