about

Árbol is the project of Diego Faucheux, peruvian composer and electronic artist that from an early age, enjoyed different forms of extreme sounds, only to later start a career seeking in contemporary, academic and classical music. He started with electronic pieces inspired in Brian Eno, Terry Riley, Stars of the Lid and more. During 2018, he studied synthesis in order to get to sound art contexts, more than music ones. After co-founding the Deshumanización collective, he got obsessed with free improvisation and Árbol was born as a solo drone artist.

The story of Zafiro, his new album for Otono, is a bit cold. The first version was commissioned by the radio programme La Rara in his native Perú. Searching not to repeat previous patterns, the piece emerged very spontaneously under that necessity. Interestingly, it evolved and integrated new learnings. In an intuitive form, its creation solidified other processes, adding minimalist, rhythmic and melodic series with certain variations, giving birth to Zafiro as a path full of layers with movement, voices, granular delays, spatial rotations and even switching homes during the pandemic, which helped gain perspective and the form of an album.

Zafiro is a meticulous work done partly with Max/MSP and multiple other dimensions, holding the intention of being listened preferently through headphones. The sounds of the EP are intertwined with samples of Hildegard von Bingen. The concept of Zafiro comes from the friendships and studies of the history of occidental cultures, even though it being a sleek stone that has been linked to religious aspects and sacred force, this composition does not intend to be taken to eclesiastic mediums, but actually to another terrain or Universe. It emanates a very particular radiation and resonance, with a very internalized sound.

The cover is thought to represent sensations inspired in the sound, submerged in a process of deep listening. In the many attempts to get there, the perspectives synergize and round up the sound concept. Zafiro is a work that expresses its very own processes in a profound way and from the inside, without absorbing majorly the noise of the outside world.
